School hit by fire to stay shut until after October holidays

A FIRE-HIT primary school is to remain closed until after the October holidays.

The blaze started in and was contained to the kitchen of Laurencekirk Primary, however smoke spread throughout the school.

An assessment has now shown there is smoke damage throughout the rooms, making them unsuitable for classes.

Despite extensive efforts, no alternative accommodation has been sourced for the pupils in the wake of the fire – and the youngsters now have an early start to their holidays.

An Aberdeenshire Council spokesman said: “All efforts will be undertaken to ensure the school is able to open as normal after the holiday period.

“We would like to apologise for the inconvenience this will cause for parents but the health and safety of pupils has to be our top priority.”
