More than 40 firefighters have battled a fierce blaze on a 34-metre long Sunseeker yacht in Poole Quay.

Crews were called to the scene just after 11.00pm on on Friday 6 May.

Mike Cox, Dorset Fire and Rescue Service’s station manager, told The Telegraph: “The fire took hold of the yacht very quickly due to its structure being made of fibreglass.

“It’s not thought to be arson as there were 24-hour security guards at the boatyard and they hadn’t seen anyone.”

Lifeboats were used to tow other yachts away from the fire, which was brought under control around four hours later.

According to media reports, the boat was sat out of the water on cradles, and work on it was almost finished. It is believed to have been owned by a multi-millionaire from Mexico, who was in the area to take delivery of it.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.
