Damaged fire hydrant causes 30ft water spout in village

A damaged fire hydrant caused a 30ft water spout in the centre of a village as firefighters tackled a nearby blaze.

About 40 firefighters were called to the fire at the Watershed adult day care centre on Bridge Street, Slaithwaite at 03:45 on Tuesday.

The fire is now out, but Bridge Street has been closed in both directions.

West Yorkshire Police tweeted: “Water still gushing in Slaithwaite. Please try and avoid the village until the geyser has gone!”

West Yorkshire Police said it was “really sad” the centre had been damaged as “it does great work for people with disabilities”.

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said: “The fire service were fighting a fire on Bridge Street and the hydrant was damaged causing water to spray up.

“Our colleagues have attended to reduce water pressure so there is no longer a plume of water.”
